Hello!  Thank you for visiting The Sassy Farmer.  We hope that if you live in Western New York that you will try our unique delivery service that brings Niagara County produce to your office or your home.  We have lived in Niagara County all our lives with the exception of our time spent at Michigan State University, earning degrees and playing field hockey.  Growing up, we were surrounded by orchards and fields of every kind.  We spent many days hanging our legs out of cherry, apple and peach trees.  In high school, we were employed to pick up "drop" apples and even prune the fruit trees.   Truly, everyone in Western New York is fortunate to be surrounded by such an amazing selection of fruits and vegetables.  The abundance is amazing.   We want to bring you a taste of that abundance that has blessed our lives in so many ways.  We truly believe that buying local produce, grown with the loving care of our Niagara County farmers, is the best choice for you, your family, our region and our economy.

In fact, we don't just believe it we practice it.  This past year, our family (Sara, Mike, Jack, Sam, Mac and Aunt Bridget) has begun to make over our food choices.   I guess you could say it began with a question, "Where did this food come from?".   From that point on, we have been reading labels.  We were surprised that so much of the food we buy from grocery stores (particularly produce) comes from across the country and even outside of the United States.  Suddenly, our "carbon footprint" became very real and it seemed as big as Goliath.    We couldn't justify buying strawberries from the other end of the nation that have been carted across 3, 000 miles of highway, burning lots of fuel along the way and arrive in plastic containers that may or may not be recyclable.    So, we have been holding out for strawberry season in Western New York.

That is truly where the quest began.   Since then, we have been searching our local area for everything and anything that is made local.    We have been delighted to travel weekly to the Amish for fresh butter and aged cheddar cheese as well as a host of baked goods.  Our bread from DiCamillo's is enjoyed heartily.  In a bit of dramatic fashion, we bought 10 laying chickens for brown eggs.  We never guessed how much we would enjoy than companionship and funny little ways that only chickens have.  Currently, Gladys is ahead in the bets for first hen to lay an egg.  This week took us to Sanborn where we purchased two crates of fresh milk from Hoover's Dairy.  I can't tell you how excited my son Sam's face was when he saw all that glorious milk.  In his words, "milk is my best friend."   Sam loves milk and I love the fact that our milk comes fresh in glass jars from the happy cows in Sanborn.

Our updates will continue.  We encourage you to think about your food in a new way.  In the words of Alice Water, "remember food is precious."   Thank you for your support!  We look forward to giving you outstanding service and the most delicious produce our region offers!
